Show us Your Life - Thanksgiving Traditions

Kelly over at Kelly's Korner is kicking off our Thanksgiving season with a Show Us Your Life- Thanksgiving Recipes and Traditions (I am #50 on her McLinky list).  So I thought I would share some of the things we traditionally do to celebrate Thanksgiving in our home.

First we always watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade while we begin some of the dinner preperations in the kitchen.  It is fun to stop inbetween chopping and stirring to join the kids on the sofa or living room floor to watch the parade.  My favorite part of the parade is the display of the top Broadway shows that are playing center stage in front of Macy's.

and of course it is fantastic seeing Santa arrive on his sleigh.

Then we LOVE watching the National Dog Show, it is fun trying to pick out who will be TOP DOG

About this time the rest of our family is arriving.  Most Thanksgivings my sister and her family come over and any current boyfriends of my older nieces.  We all bustle about the house, setting up the table, watching football on one TV, the dog show on another, and snacking while cooking the Main Thanksgiving Feast.

One of our family traditions, is to put out the Thanksgiving Thankful Tablecloth every year so that while we are all socializing around the house, family and guests can write what they are thankful for that year on the table cloth.  Then Turkey cutting begins, and over the past 2 years we set the table with Davey's preschool thanksgiving feast decorations. Our menu changes a bit every year, some years we do a deep fried turkey, some years a oven roasted turkey, and sometimes a small one of each.  We ALWAYS have mom's mashed potatoes and sweet potatoe casserole, and my mother-in-laws recipe for homemade rolls, but the rest of the sides depend on who is coming and what they bring or make.

My MoG getting ready to carve turkey, bread in the bread maker and his annual HUGE apple pie sitting up on the supper counter in the HUGE pie tin he made a few years ago.

Then after TURKEY induced naps, we like to watch Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving with the boys and just hang out with the family playing cards and if it's nice enough going for a walk in the neighborhood.

What are your favorite Thanksgiving Recipes and Traiditions?  Hope on over to Kelly's Korner and link up your posting on Thanksgiving around your home.

One of my favorite pie's to make and one that my nieces request I make every year is my Cranberry Apple Pie, so here is the recipe if you want to give it a try this year.

Cranberry Apple Pie

Ingredients:

1 (9 inch) deep dish pie crust (or I like to use the roll out pie crust you find in the diary section this way I can cut leaf shapes into the top crust).
6 apples - peeled, cored and chopped
1 (12 ounce) package fresh cranberries, roughly chopped
1 1/2 cups white sugar
1/3 cup quick-cooking tapioca
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup unsalted butter
1 egg, lightly beaten

Directions

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Invert pie shell over another pie pan of equal size. This will keep the crust from shrinking down into the pan. Bake in this position for 10 minutes, until partially baked. Turn right side up, and remove the extra pie pan from inside the crust.

In a large bowl, combine apples, cranberries, and sugar. Cover, and set aside for about 20 minutes. Mix in tapioca, and set aside for 15 to 20 minutes, until tapioca has absorbed fruit juice. Spread mixture into the partially baked pie shell.

In a medium bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, and butter. Work mixture with fingertips until crumbly. Spread mixture over the apple-cranberry filling. Brush exposed pie shell with lightly beaten egg.  (If desired, place cut out leaf shapes around the top of pie to decorate, brushing them with eggwash before placing them.)

Place the pie on a cookie sheet to catch drips. Bake 45 to 60 minutes on the bottom rack of the preheated oven, or until apples are tender when tested with a wooden pick.
