26 Children's Christmas Books in 25 Days - Day #14

I am SOOO sorry that I didn't post this yesterday.  Circumstances of the life with 2 little Boys took over and prevented me from getting to my computer last night after they were in bed.  I strained my back hanging Christmas lights with my 2 little Boys yesterday afternoon on our patio and then sitting in a metal chair at their Christmas pagent yesterday evening didn't help, so by time we got home it was pain killers, cold pack, and bed for me.
Yesterday my 2 little Boys read God Gave Us Christmas by Lisa Tawn Bergren with art work by David Hohn.  AGAIN Lisa Tawn Bergren is one of my favorite children's authors, because she truly makes an effort to explain God's love for us through her series of God Gave Us . . . . . books (I know I have a lot of favorite authors, Ha).

In the God Gave Us . . . . series of books the reader is welcomed into the home of the polar bears, and in God Gave Us Christmas the polar bear family is getting ready for Christmas by making cookies and putting up decorations.  The eldest cub is in the kitchen helping Mama bake ginger bear cookies and she asks Mama Bear "Who 'vented Christmas?  Was it Santa?"  "No,"  Mama Bear says.  "God invented Christmas.  God gave us Christmas."  Like most children, the young cub is confussed at Christmas time about who is more important Santa or God and she asks Mama Bear that very question.  God is more important, "much more important!" says Mama.

The next morning the young cub is still curious about Santa and wants to go find him, but Mama Bear explains that Santa is very hard to find.  "But we can go find God.  God is everywhere." Mama Bear says.  So later that day Little Cub and Mama Bear set out to find God and see how He gave us Christmas.  Mama Bear waits until night to show Little Cub the northern lights.

"That is God at work, Little Cub.
He sent his only Son as a baby so that we would know light from dark.
Jesus is the light of the world.
Jesus is how God gave us Christmas."

The next day Mama Bear takes Little Cub to a huge lake and a large chunk of ice cuts away from the cliff and crashes into the sea.

"That is God, Little Cub.
He's so powerful he can command the water to freeze
and the glacier to melt.  He is mightier than any kind on earth.
And because He is all powerful, he made Jesus King of all kings."

"But what about Santa? Did God give us Santa?" Little Cub asks Mama Bear the next day

"Santa Claus reminds us about many
good things like generosity and care.
But it is God and Jesus that we celebrate most come Christmas.
We always want to thank God for giving us Christmas."

On the journey through the wood looking for God Mama Bear and Little Cub find many more surprises and evidence of God and His love for us and Mama Bear tenderly explains each thing to her little cub.  That night they pair finally arrive at home and Mama Bear tucks Little Cub warmly into bed and as she begins to drift off to sleep she says "Thanks for showing me God, Mama."

"There isn't anything I'd rather do, sweet child,"

The beauttiful images will capture your child's attention, and prayerfully the words will help to capture their heart with understandting.  I pray you will find this book at your local bookstore or online resource like Amazon ,if you haven't already, and share it with the little ones in your life.  LisaTawn Bergren does such a wonderful job painting God's love into words for kids to understand His importance to us and His LOVE for us.

  • God Gave Us Two
